Peacebuilding

We believe the people of Afghanistan can build a more peaceful future.

Amidst ongoing violence in Afghanistan, IAM’s Peacebuilding Project aims to strengthen the capacity of Afghans as proactive peace builders. We’re integrating peacebuilding education into our own projects, and working in partnership with schools, universities and other organisations to spread peacebuilding knowledge throughout the country.

How does it work?

We provide peacebuilding education through trainings, networking and dialoguing, focusing on leadership, trauma awareness, indigenous peace processes, conflict sensitivities and finding strength in diversity.

There is no simple or uniform solution for building peace. That’s why we adapt all of our peace education to fit the needs of each unique group that we are working with. We focus on giving participants tools they can use to apply to their own situations, rather than ‘one-size-fits-all’ answers to conflict. The tools we share include conflict resolution skills, communication skills, conflict analysis tools, and information on trauma healing.

In 2018, we provided peace education for our own Ophthalmic Technicians Training Programme, Female Teacher Education Project and Mental Health Programme. We also worked with schools, university and adult education programmes, and conducted a peace camp in partnership with Afghan Peace Volunteers and Afghan Rayan Educational and Development Organisation.

Over the next three years, we hope to add peacebuilding as a formal subject in Afghan school and university curriculums. Through this, we hope to contribute towards lasting peace in the country.
