Previous Projects

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) has been serving the people of Afghanistan for over half a century. During that time, our work has expanded and grown, and new projects and areas of work have opened up. Over the years, some of our projects have come to a close for various reasons, and we’ve been able to hand some of our other projects over to local communities or to the Government of Afghanistan.

Find out about some of our previous projects below.

Previous Development Projects

Business Development

The IAM Business Development Services (BDS) project taught women from low-income families basic business, literacy and numeracy skills. The project helped these women to build a regular income from their business activities. Learn more here.

Renewable Energy

IAM helped remote communities access electricity to power lights and small appliances through our Renewable Energy Sources in Afghanistan Project (RESAP). Small hydropower plants and solar water heaters were installed in many communities, and eventually locals were able to take over the project. Get more information here.

Previous Health Projects

Community-Based Rehabilitation

The Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project existed to serve people with disabilities in Faryab Province. IAM ran outreach into rural communities and provided physiotherapy, assistive devices and orthopedic devices at our Orthopedic Workshop and Physiotherapy Centre. Find out more.

Mental Health Training Centre

IAM set up a Mental Health Training Centre in Herat in order to provide access to effective and affordable mental health care for people in Afghanistan’s western region. We trained doctors, nurses, midwives and other medical professionals to care for people with mental illnesses. In 2018, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health took full responsibility for the centre, which was a key step towards the long-term sustainability of the Training Centre. IAM continues to provide technical support to the staff. Learn more here.

Community Mental Health

The Community Mental Health Project (CMHP) in Herat, western Afghanistan, helped communities identify mental health issues and made them aware of services available. Find out more here.

Previous Education Projects

TechCircles IAM

TechCircles IAM offered ICT training and services to the NGO community in Afghanistan, based out of Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif. The project aimed to increase ICT capacity and effectiveness within NGOs. You can read more here.
