Adolescent Girl’s Life Radically Changed: A Mental Health Success Story

Mental Health Is Important At All Ages

Two worried parents brought their teenage daughter to the Mental Health Training Centre in Herat (MHTC-H).

For 4 years, their daughter had been behaving abnormally, and they were very concerned about her. Things had gotten so difficult that even her own brother and sisters had labelled her as “mad.”

When she came to the clinic, the doctor carefully listened to her story: she had hallucinations, sometimes behaved strangely, and had stopped attending school.

Through a combination of counselling and medication, her symptoms improved so much that the family stopped her treatment after about 6 months. Unfortunately, this led to a relapse of her problems. When they brought her back to the clinic, the doctors took time to explain the need for continued, long-term treatment.

Now, she is almost symptom-free and is not disturbed by unwanted images or voices. She has started attending a literacy class and intends to return to school. Her parents are pleased that she goes to family parties and have arranged her engagement to be married. They feel that her life has radically changed from before.
