The mental health clinic was constructed by IAM in 2006 and expanded in 2010. It is a training centre where many doctors, nurses, midwives, and other allied medical professionals come to receive training. MHTC-H work in the western provinces of Herat, Farah, Ghor, and Badghis.

The goal of MHTC-H is: All the mentally ill of Afghanistan’s western region have access to effective and affordable mental health care.

At the Mental Health Training Centre patients with mental illnesses receive professional care by doctors working in the primary health care sector. Resident students from Herat Medical Faculty are able to apply their theoretical knowledge with onsite training. Doctors from the Ministry of Public Health Psychiatric Residency Training are able to give quality mental health care on the secondary level. Patients with mental illnesses also receive professional care by nurses/midwives working in the primary health care sector, and students enrolled in Herat University majoring in Health Sciences and Psychology are able to apply their theoretical knowledge.

MHTC-H focuses on capacity building for Nurses and allied health professionals in the following areas:

Mental Health Courses for Community Health Workers, Nurses & Midwives
Provides continuing education through publishing the Healthy Community Magazine
Internal Training Courses
Individual and family counselling
Practical on-site training

MHTC-H focuses on capacity building for Residents in the following areas:

One doctor continues psychiatry specialization training in Malaysia
Supports the residency training (Psychiatry Specialization) for the project’s doctors at Herat provincial hospital by close cooperation with Ministry of Public Health. Five doctors graduated from this program in 2012 and two doctors will graduate this year. Two new doctors will begin the Residency Program in 2013. This cycle is continuing.
