Female Teachers’ Education Project

Our work in FTEP

The Female Teachers’ Education Project (FTEP) brings hope to teachers, students, and communities. The goal of FTEP is to train young women as teachers who will increase accessibility of high-quality education in rural areas of Afghanistan. This is particularly for girls who live in these areas.

Teachers trained in the project are better equipped, increasing efficacy in the classroom and raising standards. In this way, so that their jobs not only provide for their families but also contribute to positive changes in their communities. It brings hope of improved opportunity to the young girls in the classrooms, as well as the communities because of the multiple benefits, including increased economic potential, that quality education brings to society.

FTEP finished the first cycle of the project in 2017, resulting in 13 teachers who are now employed by the Ministry of Education as professional teachers in government-run schools. IAM’s FTEP staff will continue to provide ongoing support, including further training through classroom observations, making assessments, setting goals with the teachers,  giving necessary advice and support, and meeting with stakeholders when needed.

Across the villages where FTEP teachers now work, there was a 47% increase in girls’ attendance at school in 2017. The FTEP project contributed to this increase, and communities have praised the teachers for their inclusive, participatory style of teaching.

FTEP has received funding for another five-year cycle, in which three times the number of teachers will be trained.
