NOOR Eye Care Training Centre: Encouraging a Posture of Learning

A Posture of Learning Through Our Training Programmes

IAM’s National Organisation for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation (NOOR) is known throughout Afghanistan for providing high-quality eye care to Afghans. We provide service delivery for a variety of eye problems and aim to address issues such as preventable blindness wherever possible. Our work, however, isn’t just about service provision. We primarily aim to increase the skills of local ophthalmologists, which is why we have the NOOR Eye Care Training Centre. There, our doctors receive training that goes above and beyond basic eye care.

Currently, the NOOR Eye Care Training Centre provides training programmes for ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians. We see these programmes as not only knowledge-based but also as facilitating a love for knowledge and growth. We achieve that by providing a number of additional trainings in techniques not used in Afghanistan, ensuring our doctors are informed on developments in the world of eye care on a global scale.

A recent visiting doctor commented that he saw “an eagerness to know more, to understand more, understanding that there is more [room] to grow.” He went on to acknowledge our doctors have “a desire to [learn and grow] to the point that there is a discontent if they aren’t getting that, so they are asking lots of questions.” We believe this is one of the aspects of our work that sets us apart; fostering a continued interest in new ideas, research, and new understandings of treatments. It ensures that our doctors will continue to grow and learn throughout their careers.

One of IAM’s core values is learning; more specifically, it is encouraging “continuous learning, raising questions and seeking answers that throw new light on the complex issues that affect the lives of Afghans.” This foundational attitude ensures that our NOOR Eye Care facilities are places that foster inquisitive learners; it also makes our training far more than a programme for future ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians.
