Earthquake Strikes Herat: IAM Asked to Head Up Mental Health Response

A powerful earthquake with its epicentre 20 miles northwest of Herat City, Herat, Afghanistan, has left a trail of devastation. The quake occurred mid-morning of Saturday, October 7, and measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. It has devastated at least 20 villages near Herat City.

Latest government reports state that the quake has tragically claimed the lives of more than 2,400 people, with over 10,000 injured. Thousands of families have been displaced as more than 2,000 homes and buildings were reduced to rubble, leaving many without shelter.

Thanks to our extensive work in mental health, the government has asked that IAM coordinate the mental health response. To that end, we have established an Emergency Mental Health Psychosocial Support team, ready to respond when needed. This team will offer vital support to those who need it during challenging times. We have also made our mental health centres available as clinics or other emergency centres. These facilities are prepared to serve the community in times of crisis.

IAM has been aiding communities in Herat since 1996 and has pledged to provide much-needed assistance to those affected. We have participated in various community forums, fostering connections and addressing the needs of the people. We immediately provided an ambulance staffed with dedicated professionals for transporting the injured. This resource has been a lifeline, ensuring timely medical assistance when it matters most. We have also worked tirelessly to make comprehensive eye care services available at the Herat Regional Hospital.

IAM has mobilised a team of dedicated staff and is working closely with local authorities to assess the extent of the damage and identify priority areas for aid distribution. Thanks to generous donations from our long-standing partners, we can plan for the next phase of disaster relief. This funding will be used to supply food, clean water, and winterisation items, including blankets, to those in need.
