A Story from the Community Development Programme
Everyone does it, and it’s an important part of development, too! Having a sanitary way to dispose of waste is crucial, and some rural villages have not had access to clean, sustainable latrines. Part of IAM’s Community Development Programme includes building compostable latrines, which increase the sanitation of villages, protect water sources, and provide a spot to do what has to be done. This is a story of how a compostable latrine changed a village.
One day in a village, a man came to see our team.
He told us about a man he knew, who had a mill. “We brought him our wheat to make flour, and people often come to his house for milling. He does not have a latrine, so around his house is very dirty. It was hard to find a place to go to the toilet!”
He shared that when this man had guests, they weren’t sure where they could go to relieve themselves, either.
The CDP team helped to construct a compostable latrine there, and now the village is clean. Most families have latrines to use, and sanitation has improved.
