Real Life Application: From a Teacher’s Perspective
While all of our courses focus on teaching applicable English skills, students often come away with other lessons as well. Below is a story from one of SREC’s own teachers. She shares how one lesson on the third conditional also facilitated a discussion on bullying and provided a real-life application.
“Teacher, what can we do if someone is being bullied?”
The question can after reading a short story about a boy who was bullied by his high school classmates. The lesson’s intention was to teach third conditional, but I was glad to help the students think through answers to real-life problems.
“What should we do to stop bullying?” The man turned to his classmates and related a sad story of how he had witnessed the repeated bullying of one of his college classmates. Several other students also voiced stories of how they had experienced or witnessed bullying. As a class, we discussed ways to respond to a bully and how to help others who are being bullied. By the end of the class, not only did students understand the third conditional, but they also had some practical tools for real life.
