Who We Are

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) is Afghanistan’s longest continually serving non-profit charitable organisation. We aim to build capacity in the sectors of health and development. Local staff and international volunteers serve in partnership, working together in hope since 1966 for the welfare of the people of Afghanistan.

Our people

IAM has over 300 paid Afghan staff and more than 10 volunteer expatriate professionals working alongside them. Our volunteers come from Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. All foreign team members spend time learning the local language and culture, and our focus is serving the people of Afghanistan through capacity building.

Our core values

  • Dependency on God
We recognise that only with God’s guidance and help can we do anything worthwhile.
  • Love for All
We believe every human being has the same God-given value and deserves our love and care. We will therefore not discriminate but treat everyone with respect, paying special attention to those most marginalised.
  • Teamwork
We will utilise a participatory approach involving all concerned, particularly the intended beneficiaries, and encourage everyone to contribute according to their strengths.
  • Accountability
We will do what we say and what is right, be transparent about what we do, and that will be subject to internal and external evaluation.
  • Learning
We encourage continuous learning, raising questions and seeking answers that illuminate the complex issues affecting Afghans’ lives.
  • Quality Work
While aiming at excellence, we will seek to use resources effectively and deliver sustainable, long-term results through capacity building and transformation.

The finer details

Hundreds of thousands of people benefit from IAM’s work in eye care, mental health, education and development every year. In 2022, we spent 35% of our budget on disaster relief, 32% on eye care, 25% on mental health, 7% on development and 6% on education.

We design our projects and programmes to aim for long-term, sustainable development, partnering with foreign experts to bring about innovation and new solutions to old problems.
