World Mental Health Day
Herat, Mon 24 Oct, 2011
World Mental Health Day was held on the 10th October, it was celebrated in Herat with the Deputy Governor, the Health Director of Herat Province, and a representative from the provincial shura.
About 250 participants from different NGOs, the government, hospitals, and schools, attended the event to hear speeches. A local theatre performed a very powerful drama about a chained mental health patient. 6 TV stations were there to film the day.
For the last 15 years IAM has been working in the area of mental health. After more than three decades of war in Afghanistan, it is estimated that two out of three Afghans suffer from mental health problems. To meet this huge need in mental health care, IAM was invited by the Health Directorate of Herat province to establish the Primary Mental Health Project (PMHP). This project raises awareness in the community about mental health problems, and provides medical personnel with mental health training from primary health care level to specialty level. PMHP also runs the Mental Health Resource Center as a referral clinic for the treatment of mental health patients.
Through PMHP, thousands of mentally ill patients in Herat have now been treated professionally. PMHP would like to thank the Directorate of Public Health in Herat, the Residency Trainer in mental health unit Dr Muhammadi, and the different organizations working in the area of Mental Health in Western Afghanistan for their support and good co-operation.
